Horizontal Explorer Bars occupy a shared display area at the bottom of every Internet Explorer window.  The main advantage to this type of toolbar is that it has a large horizontal area in which to display your content.

Vertical Explorer Bars occupy a shared display area on the left side of every Internet Explorer window.  The main advantage to this type of toolbar is it has a large vertical area in which to display content.

Windows ^TM Desk Bars occupy a dedicated display area within the Windows Task Bar.  The main advantage to this type of toolbar is that it is always visible and accessible.  Additionally, Desk Bars can be dragged from the Task Bar onto the Desk Top where they can display additional content within a resizable window.
